Painting the stories of Cornwall's Harbours, one boat at a time

​In a world that is becoming increasingly monotonous, my art celebrates bold colour, individuality, and nostalgia. My paintings are an interplay of loose, abstract colour and defined figurative elements, drawing attention to boats bobbing in harbours and coastal architecture, and inviting the viewer to imagine the stories behind them.

​Beginning with an abstract process, I work on multiple panels at the same time - this way there is a coherence between the paintings as they share a similar colour palette and mark making.  After putting down a colourful and textured ground, I sketch the subject matter loosely over the top in pencil or charcoal, then add more loose marks to ‘knock back’ the drawing. I then add colour and contrast to bring the figurative elements to the fore.

 

I like the constraints working in acrylics provides, having to work fast and loose as the paint dries quickly. I love bold colour, particularly fluorescent orange and metallic gold as they bring memories of tanned skin and exotic holidays.
